Was the CTU lobby day over-hyped?

Posted in:

[CPS CEO Pedro Martinez] said he was happy to see so many teachers in Springfield meeting with lawmakers. CPS allowed for a paid day off for one staffer at every school district-wide — around 600 teachers and staff from Mayor Brandon Johnson’s former union. Around 250 went to the state capital.

That’s… not a huge lobby day.

  1. Perhaps the constant contrarian militant activist persona of CTU leadership doesn’t reverberate with the rank and file teachers as much as they thought.

  2. So did 350 CTU staff just take a paid day off? That’s…perfect.

  3. Wait, teachers do not like to be taken advantage of either?

  4. I wonder if there’s a difference between a CPS-sanctioned lobby day vs. a rabble-rousing CTU “day of action” when it comes to interest from members?

  5. SEIU was waaaayyyy louder and more impressive. Very unimpressive.

  6. It’s sad that, out of 514 buildings (+ 120 charters), 350 hand-picked people said “No thanks.
    I’ll pass.”

They’re called teachers, not CTU staff. And even though your question was rhetorical, the answer is no they did not.

  9. Im no big fan of CTU but people need to realize this was not a “paid day off”. They went to Springfield to work by lobbying members for more education funding, not sit by the beach.

  10. Big Thank You for the teachers, parents and staff that showed up in Springfield to lobby for our children and grandchildren.
If the state is going to have a good future, we have to turn around these low test scores.

Try not to change the subject.

351 if you count Mayor Johnson, who did make it to Springfield but apparently forgot to mention this city budget priority.
